Going to Worldcon in San Antonio (+Retrofuturist Listmania)

Big announcement: I’m going to be able to attend the World SF in San Antonio.  I’ll be helping the current AboutSF coordinators, Meagan Kane and Mackenzie VanBeest, put on the AboutSF Teaching Workshop on Labor Day (Monday, last day of Worldcon).

I’ll be leading two of the workshop’s breakout sessions with special topics for teaching using SF.  More info on those will be forthcoming.  Hint: they’ll probably include writing.

As I wrote to the programmers about other appearances, I realized how hard it was to describe last winter’s Nostalgia/Desiderium/Retrofuturism class at UC Davis.  For the record, the reading list was:

  • Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
  • Doctorow, Ragtime
  • Waldrop, Things Will Never Be the Same
  • Denton, Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede
  • Morrison, Jazz
  • Chabon, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
  • Goonan, In War Times
  • Priest, Boneshaker

That list explains more than I could in 500 words.  (Oh, yeah, and we watched American Graffiti!  And Tex Avery’s World of Tomorrow cartoons!)
